The
FELDENKRAIS METHOD teaches -- through movement -- how we can improve our
capabilities to function in our daily lives. The AWARENESS THROUGH MOVEMENT®
(ATM) lessons are taught at Personally Fit in a small group setting. In
these lessons, the students are guided through a sequence of movements:
sitting or lying on the floor, standing or sitting in a chair. During
these lessons, students engage in precisely structured movement explorations
that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Many are based
on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities. Some are
based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships.
The lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve
into movements of greater range and complexity. There are hundreds of
ATM lessons contained in the FELDENKRAIS METHOD that vary from simple
in structure and physical demand to more difficult and challenging lessons.
In learning
the FELDENKRAIS METHOD, you discover how to do the movements and appreciate
the quality of changes in your body. You learn to relax and to abandon
negative habitual patterns. Through the subtle ATM movements, you develop
awareness, flexibility and coordination. You experience relaxation and
a sense of release.

The
Pilates Method is not just a series of exercises but a complete approach
to developing body awareness and improved physical function in day to
day life. It's system is exercise-based and aims to develop the body's
"center" (abdominals and back) in order to create a stable core
for all types of movement. Through the process of regular classes or reformer
work, the body structure realigns and a balance is achieved within the
muscular-skeletal system. The goal is to enable the body to move with
maximum efficiency and minimum effort. It is a gentle, but focused exercise
with the potential to become aerobic in its advanced form. Pilates tones,
stretches and mobilizes and is often used to rehabilitate injuries, making
it popular with athletes, dancers and anyone who wants to develop their
individual physique and physical potential. Pilates is an all-encompassing
mind, body and spirit exercise - a "whole approach" philosophy
that is often shared with other techniques such as yoga and Feldenkrais.
Both one-on-one
reformer and matwork sessions are available at Personally Fit by appointment.
Additionally, small group Matwork classes at beginner levels are scheduled
weekly. Advanced classes are by appointment only.

Yoga is not just a fitness regimen, it is a philosophy which evolved out
of ancient India over 5,000 years ago. Hatha Yoga is the most popular
form of Yoga that Americans practice and is regularly taught at Personally
Fit. It involves the practice of asana-physical poses, and pranayama-breathing
techniques to create a state of optimal physical and mental fitness and
health. The discipline of Hatha Yoga can be taught in gentle or more intense
fashion. Regardless of the style in which it is practiced, Yoga can provide
many benefits: improved flexibility, strength, balance, coordination,
and peace of mind.
